“We have had record sales for the first four months of the year,” Machado said. “These numbers demonstrate that we have great products.”

Machado said Ford sold 65,000 cars in the January-April period and that commercial vehicle sales increased 34%.

Spaniards snapped up 31,000 units of the Focus in the four-month period, boosting hopes that Ford will meet its target of 80,000 for the model this year.

Ford launched its slightly updated Mondeo line at Barcelona, along with the Focus sedan for the Spanish market, which Machado predicted would account for 20% of sales in Spain.

He said that Ford’s Almusafes factory in Valencia has begun building the new sedan and the five-door Focus.

The plant also makes the five-door Fiesta, the Ka supermini and the Mazda 2.
