The main factory at Martorell in Barcelona has 800 workers too many, Efe quoted Seat as saying, according to a Reuters report. The company reportedly has given that figure before, but has now said another 600 jobs need to go at other parts of the group such as the gearbox unit and dealerships.

Seat’s management proposes cutting hours and pay across the 16,000 strong workforce as a means of preserving employment, the reports said.

Efe reported that the current workforce is excessive for Seat’s new 2006 production forecast of 429,000 vehicles – production this year was originally forecast at 446,000 vehicles, but has since dropped to 390,000.
