South Korean oil refiner SK Energy Company said it was joining forces with state run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Company (KHNP) to build a network of hydrogen vehicle charging stations across the country.
The company, a unit of SK Innovation which also owns EV battery manufacturer SK On, said last week it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KHNP to introduce hydrogen refuelling facilities in its expanding network of ‘Energy Superstations’.

SK Energy is one of the country’s largest fuel retailers and has a crude oil refining capacity of 840,000 barrels per day. The company aims to upgrade its existing network of petrol stations into solar powered energy superstations and introduce new energy retail services including EV charging systems and refuelling systems for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles alongside traditional petrol, diesel and LPG services.
The company’s first energy superstation was built last year and currently sells the electricity it generates from solar power back to the national grid.
But expected new regulations will allow SK Energy to use the electricity it generates to power its own service stations.
