The new factory for CKD (Completely Knocked Down) production is said to be one of the most modern car plants in the region, where BMW has been active for over 20 years.

Under the company’s CKD strategy, specific parts and components are put together as kits in precisely defined levels of assembly and shipped to Egypt. In compliance with local law, a high percentage of locally manufactured components is added and then finally assembled into a complete car. The factory comprises “state of the art” body and paint shops and a final assembly line.

Last year Bavarian Auto Group became the new partner for assembly, import, wholesale and after-sales support for BMW in the Egypt.

Lueder Paysen, senior vice president of the BMW group said: “With our partner we have established the right basis for our ambitious targets and durable success in Egypt. With the new factory and new dealerships we aim from the first full year of operation to achieve a higher production and sales volume than we ever had in the past, on the Egyptian market.”

In the record year 1999 over 1,500 cars were sold there.

The new distributor will initially sell locally-assembled 3 and 5 series models in Egypt and the recently redesigned ‘5’ was launched during the factory opening ceremony.

Later this year BMW will also introduce a new range of fully imported cars, starting with the BMW 6 series coupé and convertible, followed by the X3 SUV, the 1 series hatchback line, Mini Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks and the just-launched Mini convertible.

BMW builds vehicles at 23 sites in 15 countries on four continents. Identical standards and processes at all production sites are claimed to guarantee uniform build quality worldwide.
