Toyota group truckmaker Hino Motors has announced that it will double production in Japan by 2020 to 200,000 units a year.
Despite the strength of the yen, Hino expects the bulk of the increased demand to come from developing countries and sees the level of exports rising. Currently exports account for around 60% of production from Hino’s main plant in Japan, the bulk of whick is CKD parts and kits for assembly in other countries such as Mexico and Thailand.

Editor’s note: Hino’s decision to boost local production in Japan goes against the trend that has seen other Japanese truck manufacturers move more production offshore to what have hitherto been local assembly plants. Its plan for 2020 is based on shifting truck production in Japan to a new plant in Ibaraki which will receive investment of JPY40bn – 50bn (US$484m-605) and is expected to become operational in 2012.
