Google/Alphabet's autonomous driving unit Waymo has unveiled plans to introduce a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Dallas, Texas, US, by 2026, with preliminary testing already in progress.

Waymo has selected mobility solutions provider Avis Budget Group as its fleet operations partner in the city.

Under a multi-year collaboration, Avis will provide a comprehensive range of services from infrastructure and vehicle readiness to maintenance and depot operations.

Waymo noted that it will directly provide its ride-hailing service to the public through the Waymo app, while also ensuring the validation and performance of the Waymo Driver.

Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said: “We look forward to bringing our fully autonomous ride-hailing service to the people of Dallas next year, offering a new era of safe and seamless transportation. Working together with our fleet partner Avis, Waymo will offer more riders a stress-free way to get around.”

"Dallas joins an exciting list of cities that we have committed to deploying our fully autonomous vehicles next year – including Miami and Washington, D.C. – as we continue to scale our service and improve road safety," stated Waymo in a press release.

Waymo also recognises the potential to enhance road safety and collaborate with Dallas city on achieving its "Vision Zero" objectives.

The partnership aims to extend its services to additional cities over time.

Avis Budget Group CEO Brian Choi said: “Our partnership with Waymo marks a pivotal milestone in our evolution, from a rental car company to a leading provider of fleet management, infrastructure and operations to the broader mobility ecosystem.

“Together, we’re committed to making scaled autonomous mobility a reality for the people of Dallas, with plans to expand to additional cities in the near future.”

In April 2025, Toyota Motor reached an agreement to explore collaboration opportunities with Waymo through its mobility technology subsidiary, Woven by Toyota, to fast-track the development and deployment of autonomous driving technologies.

Furthermore, Waymo has already expanded its autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, to all users in Los Angeles, US, last year.
