Dani Cole July 31 2023

Truck-as-a-fleet operator WattEV has opened the US’ largest electric truck charging depot at Long Island Beach.

The charging depot has 26 ports, with 5 megawatts of charging. It is reported the site will in time have around 8 megawatts of power and stored energy to accommodate charging at pea times.

In an interview with FreightWaves, WattEV CEO and founder Salim Youssefzadeh said: “We have other sites opening this year and then a number of other sites that we have under contract that we haven’t even announced that takes us all the way up to the Sacramento area.”

WattEV has acquired its first trucks, Nikola Tre battery electric models which are capable of up to 300 miles between charges.

In 2022, WattEV was awarded grants totalling around $3 million from two Southern California government agencies. To date it has received around $20 million in grants for its trucks and infrastructure.
