Volvo ICE update not just for new cars

2.5m owners worldwide will receive an upgrade on models built as far back as 2020

Graeme Roberts September 09 2024

Volvo Cars said the software behind the new infotainment system in the EX90, EX30 and XC90 models will also be available for older models via an OTA update.

Owners of cars with Google built-in will get an upgraded layout free of charge.

That means that around 2.5m owners worldwide will receive an upgrade on models built as far back as 2020.

"This roll-out is in line with our strategy to make our cars better over time with regular over the air software updates," the automaker said.

The updated XC90 has a larger, 11.2-inch, free standing central screen with pixel density increased by 21%.

Most common apps and controls, such as maps, media and phone are now shown on the home screen and actions require fewer taps on the screen to get to features most often uses. For example, if a driver is following navigation directions and wants to change the music, it is no longer necessary to leave Google Maps.

A new contextual bar changes what is displayed according to the situation and displays the most recently used apps. Is the car is driving at low speeds, the icon for outside cameras appears to help manoeuvring in tight spaces.

PHEV models now have drive modes on the home screen.
