Volkswagen Group China and XPeng have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish one of China's “largest super-fast” charging networks.

This collaboration will leverage the technological expertise of both companies to provide an extensive charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) across China.

The partnership aims to deploy over 20,000 charging piles in 420 cities, accessible to customers of both Volkswagen Group China and XPeng.

XPeng said the network will integrate high-power liquid-cooled charging technology, enhancing the charging experience for users across the country.

In 2023, Volkswagen acquired a nearly 5% stake in XPeng, a smart electric vehicle (EV) maker, for $700m.

The companies plan to jointly develop two EVs to be marketed as Volkswagen models in China by 2026.

XPeng added: “The collaboration will also extend to future possibility of building co-branded super-fast charging stations in China, to further accelerate the charging network expansion and improve operation efficiency.”

CAMS, a Volkswagen joint venture for charging solutions, will develop the charging network, reported China Daily.

The integration of in-car systems, mobile applications, and charging infrastructure will be used enhance data connectivity, expanding access to a broader range of charging stations for vehicle owners.

Volkswagen is furthering its electrification strategy in China, aiming to launch at least 30 all-electric models by 2030.

The company is also focusing on plug-in hybrid and range-extended electric technologies to better cater to the needs of the Chinese consumers.

Founded in 2019, CAMS is a venture between Volkswagen Group China, FAW Group, Wanbang Digital Energy, and JAC Motors.

Currently, CAMS operates over 13,000 charging terminals in 213 cities across China.

In July 2024, XPeng and Volkswagen China Group revealed the establishment of dedicated project houses for engineers, aiming to expedite the development of their new EV platform, known as the ‘E/E Architecture’ collaboration.
