Uber, Momenta to launch joint robotaxi trials in Munich

Munich expected to be launchpad for commercial robotaxi service.

Uber Technologies Inc, the world's largest mobility platform, and Chinese autonomous driving technology firm Momenta have announced plans to begin testing Level 4 autonomous vehicles in Germany in 2026.

The two partners plan to integrate Momenta’s advanced, AI-driven autonomous driving technology into Uber’s global platform, with the aim of delivering a “safe, scalable, and efficient robotaxi service in Europe and beyond.”

Uber and Momenta plan to use Munich, with its “deep-rooted engineering heritage, top-tier automotive ecosystem, and openness to innovation,” as the starting point for their Level 4 testing, with the aim of expanding the trials to other European cities. Munich is also expected to be the launchpad for commercial robotaxi services in Europe.

Momenta already has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) collaboration with leading German automakers, including Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which will help speed up preparations for the trials.

Momenta’s CEO, Xudong Cao, said in a statement: “Testing L4 autonomous vehicles in Munich allows us to showcase how Momenta’s AI-driven robotaxi technology can transform urban mobility, marking a new chapter in the region’s rich automotive heritage. Germany has shaped the global automotive industry for more than a century, and now Munich will help shape the future with autonomous vehicles.”

Momenta said its “unique ‘two-leg strategy’ of deploying ADAS with partner OEMs while simultaneously advancing robotaxi technology has laid the foundation for large-scale, real-world adoption. Through its partner OEMs, Momenta’s ADAS are already on the road in 400,000 vehicles sold to customers. In addition, Momenta has been operating its robotaxi service in Shanghai and plans a commercial rollout without onboard safety operators by the end of this year.”
