Troubled Cruise plans tentative relaunch

Pared down service to start in single city, president tells employees

Dani Cole November 28 2023

General Motors’ robotaxi unit Cruise is planning a scaled-back relaunch.

The announcement was disclosed by president Mo Elshenawy to employees via email.

Operations will resume in an unspecified city, focusing on the Bolt-based Cruise AVs in the near-term, the firm said.

"Once we have taken steps to improve our safety culture and rebuild trust, our strategy is to re-launch in one city and prove our performance there, before expanding," the company said in a statement.

Longer-term plans will include the Origin vehicle, which can transport up to six passengers.

Cruise halted operations in the US after an accident involving a pedestrian in October.

Its AVs were suspended from public roads by California’s Department for Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Both CEO Kyle Vogt and Cruise co-founder and COO Daniel Kan voluntarily resigned from their positions.

While Cruise did not disclose which city the relaunch would take place in, Reuters reports that it is unlikely to be San Francisco, where the accident in October took place.

Smart parking market expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.2% by 2030

Urbanization and population growth are the major drivers of the smart parking market as they have a significant impact on parking demand, traffic congestion, and the need for efficient urban infrastructure. Smart parking systems assist in optimizing the use of current parking facilities by providing real-time information on available spaces and decreasing the time and effort spent looking for parking. Automated parking systems and automobile stacking technologies optimize land usage by requiring less space for the same number of parked vehicles.
