Toyota Motor will recall 393,838 vehicles in the US due to a fault that can prevent the rear-view camera image from appearing when the vehicle is put into reverse, according to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  

The issue could reduce rearward visibility and increase the risk of a collision. 

The recall covers certain 2022–2025 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models, as well as 2023–2025 Sequoia Hybrid vehicles.  

“A software error may cause the rear-view image not to display when the vehicle is placed in reverse,” the NHTSA said. 

Dealers will update the multimedia display software at no cost to owners.  

Toyota expects to mail owner notification letters on 16 November 2025. 

According to the agency, reports dating back to 2022 described screens appearing half-green, full-green, or black instead of showing the rear camera view.  

After receiving these reports and finding no issues with returned parts, Toyota asked the multimedia display supplier to replicate the problem. 

Between January and April 2025, the supplier’s testing indicated the green screen could be linked to deviations in lane counters used for camera synchronisation.  

The supplier suspected an abnormal signal noise occurring when the signal pauses during a camera view change.  

By introducing abnormal noise during this signal pause, the supplier confirmed a lane counter could advance independently, causing the four lanes of camera serial data to fall out of sync. 

From May through September 2025, the supplier conducted vehicle and bench cycle tests using the original software and a revised version designed to prevent the signal pause.  

The condition occurred multiple times with the original software but not with the modified version.  

On 25 September 2025, Toyota concluded that the identified vehicles contain multimedia display software that may allow the camera data lanes to become unsynchronised due to abnormal noise during a camera view change, potentially occurring before first sale.  

If triggered, drivers may see a half-green, full-green, or black screen during reversing, and the vehicle would not meet regulatory requirements. 

In its statement, NHTSA confirmed that Toyota said all known owners will be asked to return vehicles to dealers for a free software update.  

The remedy will also include other software improvements, including an update addressing a supplier-identified issue that could cause a slight delay in the rearview image appearing after selecting reverse.  

Last month, the NHTSA said Toyota and Hyundai are recalling over 1.1 million vehicles in the US due to safety hazards, including instrument panel faults and seat belt buckle malfunctions that may increase crash risks. 

Of the total, Toyota is to recall 591,377 vehicles due to an instrument panel display issue that could obscure critical driving information, heightening the risk of accidents.
