The country’s leading automaker has fallen behind on its original network plans.

Toyota Motor Corporation is stepping up the roll-out of its high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charger network across Japan, according to local reports. Having already fallen behind on its previously announced plan to have 5,000 high-speed charging points in place by the end of the current fiscal year, ending in March 2026.

Japan’s leading automaker currently has 390 high-speed and 3,800 standard-speed chargers in use across its domestic dealership network. The company confirmed that it plans to install an additional 500 high-speed chargers by the end of the fiscal year.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) account for a very small proportion of total vehicle sales in Japan, with domestic automakers, including Toyota, choosing instead to prioritise sales of hybrid vehicles in this market.

A Toyota spokesperson told reporters that the company “is not focused on installing a particular number of chargers. Instead, we will install them where they are needed.”

The Japanese government’s target is to have an overall network of 30,000 high-speed chargers in place across the country by 2030, at easily accessible locations such as convenience stores, petrol stations and shopping malls car parks.
