Toyota launches Land Cruiser 250 in Japan

Repositioning Prado to original light duty concept

Graeme Roberts April 18 2024

Toyota has added a new 250 model to its Land Cruiser model line in Japan, plus ZX and VX special edition variants, to boost sales of the recently fully redesigned, iconic SUV.

The automaker said the new 250 Series was designed to offer “ease of handling and strong off-road performance” making it a vehicle that “supports customers' daily lives and one they can trust”.

The noted the development team, under a 'back to the basics' slogan, set out to return the Land Cruiser Prado, which had shifted toward high end and luxury over time, to the “light-duty model customers have come to expect”.

The 250 is based on the same GA-F platform as the 300 series model and has electric power steering (EPS) and a stabiliser with disconnection mechanism (SDM).

It is available in Japan with two powertrains, a 2.8-litre direct injection turbo diesel with eight speed Direct Shift automatic transmission or a 2.7-litre petrol engine with six-speed Super ECT (Electronic Control Transmission) automatic.

Power is transferred to all four wheels by full-time 4WD with JTEKT Torsen (Torque Sensing) limited slip differential (LSD).
