Toyota Motor Corporation’s North American manufacturing subsidiary, Toyota North America Inc, announced this week that it plans to invest a further US$88 million in its West Virginia plant in the US to assemble its next generation of hybrid transaxles.

The Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia plant, originally built in 1996, currently employs around 2,000 people and produces engines, transmissions and other components for Toyota and Lexus models produced in the region. The Japanese automaker confirmed that this latest expansion will increase its total investment in the facility to over US$2.8 billion.

Toyota pointed out that hybrid transaxles are crucial components in electrified vehicles, as they transfer power seamlessly between the engine, electric motor, and wheels. Production is set to begin in the second half of 2026, with plans to incorporate the new drivetrain component into future Toyota and Lexus models.

Toyota, under pressure from the recent US import tariffs, said it directly employs nearly 50,000 people at 11 plants in the US.
