Toyota Motor and partners to develop hydrogen refuelling systems

The new solution will allow refuelling of heavy-duty vehicles in under ten minutes.

Toyota Motor Europe has partnered with Hydrogen Refuelling Solutions (HRS) and Engie to develop and pilot next-generation hydrogen refuelling systems.

These systems are designed to be faster and more cost-efficient, supporting the EU's goal to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen infrastructure.

The Twin Mid Flow Technology at the heart of the new solution features a higher-flow dual nozzle, enabling the refuelling of heavy-duty vehicles in under ten minutes and light-duty vehicles in less than five minutes.

Under the agreement, Toyota will contribute a test bench and a truck equipped with the Twin Mid Flow Technology.

HRS and Engie will then develop compatible hydrogen refuelling stations for trial in the EU-funded Refuelling Heavy Duty with very High flow Hydrogen (RHeaDHy) project from the fourth quarter of 2025.

Toyota Motor Europe R&D vice-president Thiebault Paquet said: “To contribute to the growth of hydrogen ecosystems, Toyota is already working with business partners who are innovating a wide range of zero carbon emission applications using our advanced fuel cell systems.

“Development of the Twin Mid Flow Technology is a next step in our effort to stimulate the growth of hydrogen ecosystems. We are excited about this new partnership.”

The technology allows for a single dispenser to serve both vehicle types, potentially revolutionising the hydrogen refuelling station model.

The cost of installing these new hydrogen refuelling stations is expected to be substantially lower, aligning with the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) targets.

By 2030, the AFIR aims for publicly accessible hydrogen stations every 200km along the TEN-T networks.

The RHeaDHy project, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership under grant agreement, is part of the EU's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

It focuses on developing high-performance refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, aiming to refuel 700 bar hydrogen trucks with 100kg of hydrogen within ten minutes.

Earlier this month, reports emerged that Toyota Motor announced plans to build a new plant in China for the production of electric vehicles (EVs) under its premium Lexus brand.
