Toyota extends partial production halt at two domestic plants

An explosion at a supplier plant has resulted in damage to a building

Dani Cole October 17 2023

Toyota Motor has extended a partial halt in production at two of its domestic assembly plants.

It follows and accident earlier this week at a supplier’s facility. It is reported that there was an explosion at Chuo Spring Co’s Fujioka plant, in Japan’s north-central Aichi Prefecture, which resulted in damage to the building.

Police and the fire department are investigating. One worker has been hospitalised and another was treated for injuries.

Earlier this week, six Toyota plants initially paused production, which was then expanded to seven facilities and 11 lines.

The pause has affected the production of Toyota’s Alphard and some Land Cruiser models, Reuters reports.

The halted production lines are at the Takaoka and Tsutsumi plants, both in Toyota City in central Japan.

In August, Toyota shutdown all its 14 domestic plants due to a system update which caused a failure.

A “lack of disk space” was found to be the cause of the malfunction. A cyberattack was ruled out as a cause.

The incident occurred at a time when tensions between China and Japan had increased due to the release of radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean.
