Toyota diesel output halt continues

Engine maker admitted falsifying test data

Graeme Roberts February 06 2024

Toyota Motor said it would continue to suspend operations on a number of vehicle production lines until at least 9 February following the test data rigging scandal that flared up at the end of January involving engine supplier Toyota Industries Corporation.

The engine maker admitted falsifying test data on the diesels it produces for 10 Toyota models including the Land Cruiser SUV and the Hiace minibus and van.

Toyota said this week it was still unable to ship models produced on six production lines at four factories in Japan under orders from the Ministry of Transport.

The automaker is pushing for production of these models to resume next week.

This is the latest in a growing series of test rigging scandals that have occurred within the Toyota Motor Group in the last few years, starting with the group’s commercial vehicle unit Hino Motors and continuing with the small car subsidiary Daihatsu last year.
