Toyota Motor announced it has begun assembling lithium-ion battery packs for hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) in Malaysia. The Japanese automaker’s local subsidiary, UMW Toyota, confirmed that the batteries are now assembled at its production facility in Bukit Raja, Selangor, for fitment in the newly launched Toyota Vios HEV and Vios HEV GR Sport sedans that have gone into production at the same plant.

Prices for the Vios HEV start at MYR 103,900 (US$ 26,400) , while the Vios HEV GR Sport is priced from RM109,900 (US$ 27,900).

The move marks a significant step in the company’s transition to electrified powertrains in the country. UMW Toyota’s president, Datuk Ravindran, told reporters that the recent launch of the Vio HEV models represents “an important step forward in making electrified mobility more inclusive in Malaysia," adding that the move “reflects the company's commitment to building local electrification capabilities.”

The Vios B-segment sedan is Toyota’s best-selling model in Malaysia, with over 32,000 units produced in 2025, ahead of the Hilux pickup truck with 27,600 units. The company said local battery assembly “supports Malaysia’s sustainability goals while strengthening local industry and workforce skills.”

The Vios HEV self-charging hybrid system comprises a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor generator, with a combined power output of 111 PS and a fuel consumption of 3.6 lites per 100 km. The system supports low-speed electric driving and regenerative braking, making it particularly suited to urban driving.

The Bukit Raja plant has a production capacity of 30,000 battery packs per year, with a local content of 97% according to local reports, and includes automated inspection systems, battery performance testing, and full traceability.
