Toyoda Gosei launches AI-based truck loading logistics

Expected to eliminate approximately 4,400 shipments annually

Luke Martin September 01 2023

Toyoda Gosei has unveiled a system, using AI, that automates truck load volume calculations to improve transport efficiency in product delivery.

The system has been implemented at its Miyoshi Distribution Centre in Aichi, Japan.

It is expected to eliminate approximately 4,400 shipments annually, leading to a reduction of 140 tonnes in CO2 emissions.

Traditionally, operators visually checked delivery truck cargo space and calculated load volume, resulting in varying judgments due to experience and limited truck assessment capacity. The company said accuracy was a concern, prompting the development of this system.

The new system records cargo volume for all trucks unloading at the Miyoshi DC (500 shipments daily), using AI image analysis to calculate load volumes accurately and instantly.

In some trial routes, shipment counts have reduced from 15 to 12 daily.

The company said the system could help address the truck driver shortage issue in Japan.

It will be introduced at the Ichinomiya DC (TG Logistics) later this year, with the goal of enhancing transport efficiency across the entire Toyoda Gosei Group in Japan.

AI set to be the face of the digital revolution shaping the automotive sector

The automotive sector is undergoing a digital transformation fuelled by changing global supply-chain dynamics, tighter market competition, and rising inflation. AI is a key part of this digital revolution. Focus is directed toward driver assistance features for safety and hazard detection and greater automation of many vehicle processes and functions. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), facial recognition, and motion tracking will be vital for developing incockpit safety features such as early driver fatigue detection.
