Tesla has stopped taking orders for the US-made Model S and Model X vehicles on its Chinese website, media reports say.
The move comes as a trade war between the US and China has intensified with both countries dramatically raising import tariffs on each other’s products. China has announced it will raise tariffs on all US goods to 125% starting April 12, after US President Donald Trump imposed an equivalent charge designed to counter America’s trade deficit and punish Beijing for retaliating against US import taxes.

Reuters reported that new orders for the two imported models were no longer available on Tesla’s WeChat mini programme account.
Both models are made in the United States at Fremont, California, and imported to China.
Tesla also makes Model 3 and Model Y cars at its Shanghai plant, mainly sold in China or exported to other markets in Asia.
According to GlobalData, China imported and sold around 1,600 Model X cars and 300 Model S cars in 2024. Those totals are dwarfed by sales of the Model 3 and Model Y made in China for the Chinese market.
