Stellantis patents EV tech to simulate traditional muscle car experience

Filed to World Intellectual Property Organization

Dani Cole February 23 2024

A patent filed last year by Stellantis to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shows that the automaker is looking to simulate the experience of ICE engines in EVs by using an Active Sound Enhancement (ASE) system.

In the document, Stellantis outlines that EVs create “low noise levels which poses a challenge to pedestrian aural awareness.”

It continues that: “Additionally vehicles that have traditionally been considered ‘muscle cars’ or ‘high performance’ may no longer have a characteristic sound emitted through their exhaust systems.”

The ASE simulates the feel of an ICE vehicle, based on a combination of sensor technology and signal processing that can monitor motor speed, acceleration and wheel speed. Engine sounds are then generated to match driving conditions.

Coupled with this, an active vibration enhancement (AVE) – for a vehicle without an internal combustion engine – recreates vibrations that might be felt when driving a traditional high performance/muscle car.
