Stellantis has unveiled its first in-house-developed automated driving system, STLA AutoDrive 1.0, to offer hands-free and eyes-off (SAE Level 3) functionality.
The system is designed to enhance vehicle intelligence, automation, and user experience, forming a core component of Stellantis’ broader technology strategy alongside STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit.
STLA AutoDrive offers automated driving capabilities at speeds reaching 60km/h, allowing drivers to engage in other activities while commuting in congested traffic, the company says.
Upon being activated by a physical button, the system takes control of steering, braking, and speed adjustments while maintaining safe distances based on traffic flow.
Using advanced sensor suite, the system ensures “high-precision awareness” and “reliable operation”, even in challenging conditions, Stellantis claims.

Designed for smooth and predictable operation, the STLA AutoDrive functions as an adaptive cruise control system at higher speeds, with Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) capabilities.
The system is built on a scalable architecture, allowing it to be deployed across Stellantis’ global vehicle portfolio with cloud connectivity enabling ongoing improvements through over-the-air updates.
While the system complies with applicable market regulations, it requires drivers to be ready to assume control when prompted.
Future advancements in STLA AutoDrive may include hands-free and eyes-off operation at speeds of up to 95km/h and enhanced off-road automation for select models.
In a separate development, Stellantis has delayed the production of its next-generation Jeep Compass compact SUV in Canada, reported Reuters citing the company.
The company had closed its assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, for retooling in 2024, with initial plans to restart production in 2025.
However, the revised schedule now targets the first quarter of 2026 for production to commence.
