Stellantis ‘evaluating Tesla’s charging standard’ – report

After Ford and GM have said they will adopt Tesla’s North America charging standard, Stellantis and others may be inclined to follow

David Leggett June 14 2023

Stellantis is reportedly evaluating Tesla's North America charging standard after Ford and General Motors recently said they were adopting it.

According to Reuters, Stellantis said in a statement that it is continuing to evaluate the NACS standard and looks forward to ‘discussing more in the future’.

NACS refers to Tesla's charging design, the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. Tesla’s supercharger network is the largest charging stations network in the US.

"Our focus is to provide the customer the best charging experience possible. Our Free2Move Charge brand will offer seamless, simple solutions whether at home or on-the-go through partnerships with charging providers," it also said in the statement sent to Reuters.

The decision by Ford and GM to adopt Tesla’s charging standard in the US in 2025 puts more pressure on other OEMs to follow suit. Those three carmakers dominate the US EV market. However, some analysts point out that Stellantis is seen as a laggard in terms of EV programs for the US market.

Some automakers – such as VW - remain committed to the CCS rival connector port standard in the US, but the Ford and GM decisions are forcing re-evaluations.
