US EV maker Rivian will equip its forthcoming R2 with GSMA SGP.32-enabled eSIM technology and 5G under a partnership with German security tech group Giesecke+Devrient and telecommunications operator AT&T.
SGP.32 is a technical specification developed by the global system for mobile communications association (GSMA) for remote SIM provisioning in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including vehicles.
The R2, due to reach customers later this year, is set to be among the first vehicles worldwide to debut with support for the newly finalised GSMA SGP.32 standard, developed for Internet of Things (IoT) and automotive applications.
The technical architecture allows Rivian to introduce or switch mobile network operator (MNO) partners as it expands into new markets, without requiring changes to vehicle hardware.
Rivian business development global director Brandon Blumber said: “We chose G+D for their expertise in secure, scalable eSIM technology and their ability to support a global launch. Together with AT&T, we are building a connectivity architecture that delivers performance today - plus flexibility as we scale into new markets.”
By enabling a single-SKU strategy, SGP.32 supports deployment across multiple regions while reducing the operational complexity typically associated with managing several MNO integrations.
Under the agreement, Rivian will install automotive-grade eSIM hardware provided by Giesecke+Devrient in its vehicles.
It will also deploy the company’s eSIM IoT Remote Manager (eIM) platform to support its connectivity infrastructure.
AT&T will act as Rivian’s first mobile network operator in the US.
The company will provide 5G connectivity to enable in-vehicle services, over-the-air software updates and other digital functions across the vehicle’s lifecycle.
The companies said the collaboration is intended to provide scalable and secure connectivity as Rivian broadens its footprint in additional markets.

With G+D’s secure eSIM hardware and compliant remote management capabilities, Rivian can deploy a single global hardware SKU while retaining full flexibility to manage connectivity remotely and securely throughout the vehicle lifecycle.”
Last week, Rivian formed a partnership with EnergyHub to broaden participation in utility-managed charging schemes for drivers in North America.
The agreement links Rivian’s direct customer interface with EnergyHub’s managed charging platform, enabling Rivian vehicles to take part in utility-led electric vehicle programmes.
