Nissan’s global vehicle sales fall by 6% in May

Sharp falls reported in Japan and China year-to-date.

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Company reported a 6% year-on-year decline in global sales to 256,159 vehicles in May 2025, including Nissan and Infiniti branded models, with domestic and overseas volumes both weaker. Sales in Japan dropped by just over 12% to 27,736 units last month, while overseas deliveries declined by 5.2% to 228,423 units.

In the first five months of 2025, global sales fell by 5.9% to 1,351,595 units from 1,436,074 in the same period last year, with sales in Japan falling by 11.5% to 185,385 units, while overseas sales declined by 5% to 1,166,210 units.

China was the worst-performing major overseas market for Nissan so far this year, with sales plunging by over 21% to 225,560 units, while sales in Europe fell by 3.4% to 157,046 units. Deliveries in North America rose by 3.4% to 575,066 units, including a 2.1% rise in US sales to 416,606 units, a 6.2% rise in sales in Mexico to 107,563 units, and an 8.5% rise in sales in Canada to 50,212 units. Sales in other markets combined fell by almost 6% to 208,538 units.

In terms of production, global volumes dropped by over 13% to 1,185,972 units in the first five months of 2025, with output in Japan falling by over 12% to 242,794 units, while overseas volumes dropped by 13.5% to 943,178 units – driven lower by a 26% plunge in Chinese output to 211,672 units and a 19% decline in US output to 210,414 units, while production in Mexico rose by just 1% to 282,418 units. UK production fell by 19% to 108,541 units.

Exports from Japan declined by 17.4% to 134,754 units year-to-date, with shipments to North America falling by 30% to 59,206 units and exports to Europe plunging by over 40% to 14,046 units, while exports to other markets rose by 11.5% to 61,502 units.
