NHTSA probes fatal VinFast crash

Report filed stated possible steering issues

Dani Cole May 21 2024

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into a fatal California crash involving a VinFast VF8 vehicle.

A family of four, including two children aged 13 and 9, died in the  accident, which took place in April this year.

No other vehicles were involved.

Police said the driver appeared to have lost control and collided with a tree, with an ensuing vehicle fire.

They also told media that the family did not own the car.

The owner of the EV had loaned it to a co-worker.

A complaint filed with the NTSHA on April 29 said steering may have been an issue.

Local newspaper the Pleasanton Weekly quoted a VinFast spokesperson saying the automaker was aware of the accident: "The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident and will share their findings when their work is completed."
