NextStar Energy Inc, a Canadian electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing joint venture between South Korea’s LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES) and global automaker Stellantis, has announced that it has begun assembly of battery modules at its newly built plant in Windsor, Ontario.

The two partners began building the plant in 2022, which will have an eventual production capacity of 49.5 GWh of batteries per year once the designated CAD 5 billion (US$3.8 billion) is fully invested—enough to power 450,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Production of battery cells is scheduled to begin at the plant in the first half of 2025.

LGES has a 51% stake in the joint venture, with Stellantis holding the remaining 49%. Batteries produced at the plant will mainly be fitted to Stellantis’ Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep branded vehicles produced in North America.

NextStar Energy said in a statement: "The start of module production is the most significant operational milestone yet, demonstrating NextStar Energy's commitment to becoming an industry leader in North American battery technology and production."
