Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Motor Group’s (HMG) main chassis and cockpit systems and modules affiliate, has opened a new R&D facility dedicated to development of core electric vehicle (EV) drivetrain components.
The newly established Hyundai Mobis Electrification Research Center is within HMG’s main R&D complex in Uiwang in Gyeonggi Province.
The nine floor building, with four underground floors will focus on research and development, testing, performance evaluation and quality analysis of core electrification components. It will work closely with HMG and support the company’s growing global network of EV drivetrain plants.
The new centre consolidates at a single site Hyundai Mobis’ main electrification R&D operations which were previously dispersed at various locations including the Mabuk R&D Center in Yongin, and in Uiwang and Seosan. It will help improve the company’s operational efficiency in this increasingly important segment of the automotive industry.
The Mabuk R&D Centre will continue to lead the development of automotive systems such as autonomous driving, connectivity and chassis safety, while the company will continue to operate the Seosan Proving Ground where the company’s R&D achievements are applied to vehicles to assess performance and reliability.
At the inauguration ceremony, Hyundai Mobis’ newly appointed president, Lee Gyu Suk, said the centre was a "strategic hub for next generation electrification technology, equipped with an optimal research environment".
Hyundai Mobis is an integral part of HMG’s vehicle development operations, focusing on vehicle platforms, including chassis, body, safety and powertrain modules and systems and advanced electronics.
The company is diversifying its customer base to maximise economies of scale with Hyundai, Kia and Genesis currently accounting for over 90% of its global business.
It recently secured orders from VW Group worth several trillion won for electric drivetrain components.
Hyundai Mobis recently launched a new cockpit display for future premium vehicles, featuring large high-definition screens. The Quantum Dot and Local Dimming Display has a thin screen which maximises brightness and clarity. The display is available for sale to all global automakers.
