Mobis’ new front end module

Minimises air resistance, potentially extending range

Graeme Roberts March 15 2024

Hyundai Motor affiliate and supplier Mobis has developed a new integrated front end module for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The company said the FEM minimises air resistance, potentially extending range approximately 20km (12 miles) per charge while maintaining a classic front grille design which “overcomes the uniformity” of most current BEV designs, helping to increase “marketability” in a fiercely competitive segment.

Mobis said the front end was suitable for SUVs and CUVs and could accommodate autonomous systems. Its LiDAR system protrudes outward only during driving, for design and sensor protection, while the battery charger socket also retracts automatically once charging is complete.

The company said “the most distinctive feature is a system that automatically opens and closes parts like the grille and hood, reducing air resistance during high speed driving and improving range. This system, which allows the intake of external air and the exhaust of air after heat exchange, improves battery cooling efficiency and controls airflow”.

Mobis said current BEVs “typically adopt a streamlined design to reduce air resistance by eliminating the radiator grille, leading to a somewhat uniform appearance among passenger electric vehicles”.

It has “differentiated itself by maintaining the traditional grille design while improving aerodynamic performance. Additionally, integrating design elements such as LED lighting has enhanced marketability. This technology is particularly beneficial for SUV and CUV electric vehicles where lowering the vehicle height is challenging”.
