Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced that it plans to launch an all-new battery-powered Eclipse Sportback in North America in the second half of 2026. The model will be produced and supplied by its Alliance partner Nissan Motor Company, as part of an OEM deal, for sale in the US and Canada.
The new Eclipse Sportback is based on the 2026 Nissan Leaf, which is produced at Nissan’s Tochigi plant in Japan. Mitsubishi said that the new battery-powered subcompact crossover vehicle was designed for a variety of driving needs, offering “practicality across a range of uses, from everyday driving to leisure activities.”
Mitsubishi confirmed that it has applied its own “distinctive modifications” to the exterior of the Eclipse Sportback to “express the model’s unique identity,” including new front and rear bumpers, front grille, headlights and rear combination lamps, tailgate, D-pillars and wheels.
The Nissan Leaf is a front-wheel-drive model available with a choice of 52 kWh and 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery packs, providing a maximum driving range of 386 miles. It is driven by a 160 kW front-mounted motor.
As Alliance partners, Mitsubishi and Nissan share a number of models globally to help improve economies of scale, from mini vehicles (kei-cars) in Japan, to pickup trucks, SUVs and other models in the North American and Asia-Pacific markets.
