Maxion Wheels’ light vehicle aluminium wheels plant in Johannesburg, South Africa, is now using power from its own solar farm. The new 2.9 MWh photovoltaic system – installed by the energy company Terra Firma – is described as a significant milestone in the company’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint.

The company says adding solar power to the plant’s energy mix underscores its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advance environmentally responsible manufacturing.

The car park and ground mount solar installation will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 5,100 tons each year and supply around 20 percent of the plant’s yearly energy needs. A second phase of additional rooftop solar capacity is scheduled for completion in Q1 2026, with the possibility of integrating a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for energy arbitrage and backup power.
