Hyundai Motor Company has established a subsidiary in China called CoMo, focused on artificial intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D), as it steps up its development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs) for the world’s largest automobile market - according to reports in China.

The South Korean automaker’s new subsidiary, based in Shanghai, was established at the end of December with initial equity capital of CNY213m (US$29m) and will focus on AI-based solutions for autonomous driving and the “Internet of Things.”

CoMo also aims to align Hyundai’s new product development with Shanghai’s plans to build a smart transport ecosystem, including SDVs. The city is expanding its autonomous driving infrastructure and has recently opened 2,200 km of its roads for autonomous driving tests according to the reports.

Como will work closely with other Hyundai Motor Group R&D centres in China, including the Hyundai Motor Group Advanced & Digital R&D Centre in Shanghai and the Yuanti Hyundai Motor R&D Centre.

Hyundai is also stepping up the roll-out of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China, with its first China-specific model expected to be unveiled later this year featuring an autonomous driving system based on Haomo.AI’s generative AI.

The company’s joint venture with BAIC Group, Beijing Hyundai Motor Company Ltd, is also expected to unveil five additional new energy vehicles (NEVs) based on models from BAIC’s Arcfox units.
