Hyundai Mobis shows new autonomous parking system

Developed without expensive radar or lidar sensors

Hyundai Mobis said it had developed a new autonomous parking control system which can park a vehicle in its regular spot with a single touch of a button.

The Hyundai Motor Group’s main component supplier said the improved version of its Mobis Parking System (MPS), originally launched in 2021, has a Memory Parking Assist (MPA) system which remembers the parking manoeuvre when a driver parks his car in learning mode. The vehicle can the repeat the parking process over and over in the same parking space with just a touch of the button.

The system combines video based sensor, ultrasonic sensor and SVM (Surround View Monitor) camera technology which simultaneously measure vehicle location and relate it to digital maps.

The company said it expected the system to be well received in Europe and China where designated parking areas and private garages are relatively common.

It claimed the system eliminates parking stress as automated parking in the same location is possible “based on the previously learned driving path”.

The new system, developed without expensive radar or lidar sensors, using solely ultrasonic and SVM cameras, provides technology and cost advantages.

"Hence, rapid 'popularisation' in regular vehicles and global orders is anticipated."

The company said a core MPS technology, Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA), had also been upgraded. The existing RSPA, already in several production cars, recognises parking spaces using ultrasonic sensors and allows perpendicular and parallel parking. But it needs the presence of a vehicle nearby for its ultrasonic system to detect. The RSPA 2 has a feature that recognises parking lines through its video based sensor, to allow autonomous parking in an empty parking space without surrounding vehicles.

This technology was recently installed in the Kia EV9 and Hyundai G90, GV60 and Ioniq 6 EVs.
