GWM official BRICS 2023 vehicle provider

Chinese automaker’s president said it was a “great honour”

Dani Cole August 25 2023

Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors (GWM) provided the official vehicles for the 2023 BRICS Summit in South Africa.

The HAVAL H6 and other models were used to transport delegations and summit media, the firm said.

The international conference – made up of the major emerging economies Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – offers a platform for its member states to discuss economic collaboration.

BRICS currently represents a quarter of the world’s GDP, and 40% of the global population.

It was recently announced that Iran and Saudi Arabia were among six other nations set to join the bloc.

GWM has had a presence in South Africa for 16 years, having entered the South African market in 2007.

It was also the official vehicle provider for the 2018 BRICS Summit in South Africa.

Parker Shi, Vice President of GWM, stated that providing mobility services for the BRICS Summit was a “great honour”.

The automaker says it is “dedicated” to meeting the “diverse mobility needs” of local users in South Africa.

The HAVAL H6 is China’s top-selling SUV and is manufactured in Tianjin. Mass production of the vehicle was inaugurated in 2011.

Earlier this year the country overtook Japan as the world’s largest vehicle exporter.

AI set to be the face of the digital revolution shaping the automotive sector

The automotive sector is undergoing a digital transformation fuelled by changing global supply-chain dynamics, tighter market competition, and rising inflation. AI is a key part of this digital revolution. Focus is directed toward driver assistance features for safety and hazard detection and greater automation of many vehicle processes and functions. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), facial recognition, and motion tracking will be vital for developing incockpit safety features such as early driver fatigue detection.
