Gotion High-tech plans Illinois battery factory

Supported by state tax benefits worth US$213m over 30 years

Luke Martin September 11 2023

Chinese battery maker Gotion High-tech has chosen Manteno, Illinois for its new US$2bn electric vehicle (EV) lithium battery factory.

The 150 acre facility was expected to produce 10 GWh of lithium ion battery packs and 40 GWh of cells.

Gotion’s US$2bn investment would be supported by state tax benefits worth US$213m over 30 years. It would also be the first recipient of Invest in Illinois funding, from which it will receive US$125m in capital funding.

The total incentive package would be US$536m.

Production was set to begin in 2024.

“We are not building a new factory but are planning to reuse an existing one and bring it back to life again,” said Gotion chairman Li Zhen.

In June 2023, Gotion claimed to have developed a lithium-iron-manganese-phosphate (LMFP) battery which could provide enough electricity for over 600 miles per charge, and over 1m miles worth of recharges.

It also announced plans in June to invest US$6.4bn to establish a new 100 gigawatt-hour EV battery manufacturing facility in Morocco.

Asia-Pacific leads the Connected Vehicle Technologies market in 2023

The middle class is expanding throughout several Asian nations, which has increased demand for linked and intelligent vehicles. Consumer demand for features like connected services, in-car infotainment, and ADAS has accelerated the development of connected vehicle technologies. APAC nations have made significant investments in enhancing their digital infrastructure, including the rollout of 5G networks, which help to provide dependable and quick communication between vehicles and the surrounding infrastructure.
