GM moving Detroit HQ in 2025

Working with real estate firm Bedrock to redevelop current 'Ren Cen' base

Dani Cole April 16 2024

General Motors has said it will relocate its global headquarters to Hudson’s Detroit in 2025.

It will become the anchor tenant at Bedrock’s development, on the historic site of the former JL Hudson department store.

The move is GM’s fourth headquarters relocation in Detroit since 1911 which, it said, reaffirmed its long standing commitment to the city.

GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra said: “Our new headquarters will provide collaboration areas for our teams, executive offices and display space for our vehicles.”

The automaker has signed an initial 15 year multi level lease for top office floors plus space to show its vehicles at street level.

Dan Gilbert, chairman and founder of Bedrock said: “For more than a century, General Motors has been synonymous with the city of Detroit, and we warmly welcome them to Hudson’s as they continue to drive the future of innovation and mobility.”

GM, Bedrock, the city of Detroit and Wayne County will collaborate to explore redevelopment opportunities for the current GM HQ, the Renaissance Center (a major downtown riverside Detroit landmark also known as 'RenCen').
