General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution have extended their 14-year battery technology partnership to include the development of prismatic cells.

The collaboration is expected to power a range of future GM electric vehicles (EVs).

It is part of GM's strategy to diversify its supply chain and leverage multiple chemistries and form factors.

The prismatic cells, known for their flat, rectangular shape and rigid enclosures, are designed for space-efficient packaging within battery modules and packs.

This design can lead to a reduction in EV weight and cost, while also simplifying manufacturing processes by minimising the number of modules and mechanical components required.

LG Energy Solution specialises in prismatic cell production and holds an "extensive" patent portfolio covering battery design, manufacturing technologies, and packaging.

In line with its technology-agnostic approach to battery cells, GM aims to optimise range, performance, and charging speed across its EV portfolio, thereby enhancing the driving experience for EV users.

GM vice president of battery cell and pack Kurt Kelty said: “Together with LG Energy Solution, we’ve built Ultium Cells in North America, creating thousands of advanced technology jobs in the US and powering our diverse EV portfolio.

“We’re focused on optimising our battery technology by developing the right battery chemistries and form factors to improve EV performance, enhance safety, and reduce costs. By extending our partnership with LG Energy Solution, we’re taking an important step toward these goals.” 

LG Energy Solution executive vice president and head of the company’s Advanced Automotive Battery division Wonjoon Suh said: “LG Energy Solution is proud to be expanding its relationship with one of its strongest partners. Together with GM, we’ve already made tremendous progress.”
