GM CEO Barra rows back on 1 million EV goal

Slowing demand for BEVs is a factor at play

Dani Cole July 17 2024

Mary Barra, General Motors’ CEO has backed down on the firm’s expectations for its EV program.

Speaking to CNBC earlier this week, she said that GM wouldn’t have production capacity in place to build one million EVs at the end of 2025, which was its previous target.

She added that customer demand will influence how fast the automaker can get to the one million-mark for annual sales of EVs.

She said: “We won’t get to a million just because the market’s not developing, but it will get there,” according to a Bloomberg report.

The move follows steps by other makers, including Ford, to row back on their BEV ramp-up plans due to slower than expected demand.
