General Motors has issued a recall for approximately 132,000 trucks following concerns that tailgates may unlatch unexpectedly.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall, which impacts select 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500, 3500, and GMC Sierra HD 2500, 3500 models with power-unlatching tailgates.

A risk has been identified where water intrusion could cause a short circuit in the electronic gate-release switch, potentially leading to the tailgate unlatching while the vehicle is in Park.

The NHTSA has advised owners of the affected models to ensure that their tailgates are securely closed and latched before driving.

GM said it was "working to quickly remedy this matter."

The NHTSA stated that dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies at no cost.

This recall is one of several recent actions by General Motors to address vehicle safety.

Last month, General Motors announced the recall of 461,839 vehicles due to a transmission control valve issue. The NHTSA stated that the defect could cause the rear wheels to lock, increasing crash risks.

Affected models include specific 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, as well as 2021 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon SUVs.

Last month, the company decided to discontinue production of the gas-powered Cadillac XT4 SUV in January 2025.

The decision aligns with the automaker's shift toward electric vehicles (EVs) and its $390m investment in the Fairfax, Kansas assembly plant to produce next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EVs.

Also, General Motors plans to eliminate approximately 1,000 jobs globally, primarily in the US, as part of efforts to streamline operations.

The move is aimed at addressing financial challenges in the company’s EV division, with the company targeting a reduction in EV-related losses of $2bn to $4bn in 2025.
