Geely and Baidu launch new brand

Ji Yue would be positioned as a “premium intelligent technology brand”

Graeme Roberts August 16 2023

Zhejiang Geely and Baidu jointly launched a new car brand this week, Ji Yue, marking a significant milestone.

Geely said Ji Yue would be positioned as a “premium intelligent technology brand”. The first model, the Ji Yue 01 EV, was scheduled to be unveiled in the fourth quarter of 2023 and would feature systems based on Baidu’s artificial intelligence (AI) expertise, including intelligent cabins and autonomous driving.

The Jidu Auto deal, agreed in 2021, is to combine Geely manufacturing expertise and established automotive supply chain with Baidu software and AI capability to cater for the fast changing requirements of the “tech-savvy” Chinese consumer.

Geely said Ji Yue would also build its own charging network in China.

The Ji Yue 01 was understood to be based on the Robo-01 concept first displayed in early 2022 which has a number of AI-based systems including voice interaction systems allowing for “human car environment” communication and pixel headlamps.

High upfront costs could be detrimental towards the growth of the off-highway EV market

The global off-highway electric market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.4% by 2030, per GlobalData estimates. Despite the strong growth, high upfront costs may pose a challenge. Due to the high capacity of these vehicles, they consume large amounts of power from a number of battery packs installed on the vehicle, whose high cost in turn adds to the cost of the vehicle, thereby increasing the initial cost. However, governments worldwide are offering subsidies and tax exemptions in order to help customers to counter the initial purchase cost.
