Aion, the EV unit of Chinese state-owned automaker Guangzhou Automobile (GAC), has said it has started line production of its first supercar.
The Hyper SSR is China’s first electric luxury supercar, which Aion says has been fully developed and manufactured in China.
It was first unveiled in 2022, with deliveries planned for October 2023.
Available in three variants, it features a carbon fibre body, 900V silicon carbide chips and a Quark e-motor. It carries a starting price of 1.28 million yuan ($176,380).
In a statement, Aion said that with the launch of the Hyper SSR, the era that Ferrari and Lamborghini have monopolised in the supercar segment “has been ended by China.” It comes as Chinese automakers – which are dominating the EV race – seek to further rival Western car manufacturers.
Earlier this year Aion announced that it would begin assembly of EVs in Thailand by June 2024.
