FAW’s 1700V power module speeds up BEV charging

The newly developed power module has twice the voltage of systems widely in use today.

Chinese state-owned automaker FAW Group revealed it has developed a high-voltage, 1700V silicon carbide (SiC) power module designed to speed up battery electric vehicle (BEV) charging, according to local reports.

The newly developed power module, with more than twice the voltage of systems widely in use today, is expected to help advance the development of ultra-high-voltage BEV platforms - reducing charging times to around 5 minutes.

The automaker stated that the newly developed power module uses a 1700V locally-developed chip, which helps increase power density and efficiency while delivering high output and minimal energy loss. The module is also reported to demonstrate strong stability when operating under extreme pressure and temperatures.

FAW noted that its new high-voltage power module is expected to address two main concerns associated with BEVs: charging speed and range anxiety. The new power modules are initially expected to feature in the automaker’s premium Hongqi BEV range.
