Daimler Truck launching electric Canter in India

The first DICV battery electric commercial vehicle to be offered

Graeme Roberts April 18 2024

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG on Thursday announced the launch of the all electric, light duty redesigned eCanter in India.

This is the first DICV battery electric commercial vehicle to be offered in the country and is also part of a wider company move into the light duty truck segment.

The e-Canter won't, however, reach dealer lots for six to 12 months.

DCIV MD and CEO Satyakam Arya said in a statement: “The launch... is the first step in our long-term strategy to decarbonise our product portfolio.

"However, the reality is that diesel internal combustion engine (ICE) and CO2-neutral propulsion technologies will continue to co-exist in the Indian market for the foreseeable future."

The eCanter's battery electric platform was designed at Daimler Truck subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus (MFTBC) in Japan where series production of the first generation model started in 2017. The current second generation made its world debut in Japan and Europe in H2 2022.

Since the G1 launch, the eCanter has sold in "hundreds" in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong", DCIV said.

"The proven, next generation eCanter will have significant presence in major markets around the world with 40 variants between 4.25 and 8.55 tons and numerous body options."
