Daihatsu to restart production at Kyoto

Ordered to suspend all domestic vehicle shipments in December

Graeme Roberts January 25 2024

Daihatsu Motor said three of its four domestic vehicles plants would stay closed until at least 16 February but added it hoped to restart operations at Kyoto much sooner, according to local reports.

Daihatsu, the small car unit of Toyota Motor Group, was ordered to suspend all domestic vehicle shipments in December after an independent third party investigation commissioned by the automaker revealed safety tests and other procedures on a large number of new models had been widely and systematically falsified by the company’s staff and its suppliers for over three decades.

Earlier this week, the automaker said the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) had “lifted its instruction to suspend shipments of five models” as they “comply with the standards of the Road Transport Vehicle Act”.

The five models are the Daihatsu Grand Max, Toyota Town Ace Van, Mazda Bongo van, Toyota ProBox and Mazda Familia Van.

Kyoto makes the Toyota ProBox and Mazda Familia Van models which have been cleared by the ministry, as well as the Move Canbus minivehicle.

Separately Daihatsu notified MLIT this week it plans to recall 323,000 vehicles in Japan due to a door defect, according to local reports.
