GM’s autonomous driving unit Cruise is preparing to restart its robotaxi testing in Phoenix, Arizona, news agencies report.

The firm is expected to announce the testing this week.

It comes after it was grounded in the US last year following an incident involving a Cruise AV and a pedestrian in San Francisco, California. 

The testing will use safety drivers.

In a statement given to Bloomberg, it said: “We are in the process of meeting with officials in select markets to gather information, share updates and rebuild trust.”

Before it was suspended, Cruise had driverless operations in the states of Arizona, Texas and Florida.
