California issues draft regulations for autonomous trucks

Decision welcomed by Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association

Dani Cole September 03 2024

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued draft regulations on the operation of autonomous vehicles on highways.

The agency is planning a framework that would initially require safety drivers for both light and heavy-duty vehicles, according to Reuters.

The draft regulations will pave the way to enable self-driving trucks to be able to begin long-haul deliveries.

The decision has been welcomed by industry bodies such as the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, which said the draft order is an “important step” for the future of “roadway safety and supply chain resiliency in California."

The DMV is accepting written feedback on the language of the draft until early October, Reuters reports.
