BYD to build Indonesia EV plant

Already has seven dealers and plans 50 by the end of the year

BYD Auto has officially entered the Indonesian market with three electric vehicle models as iy continues its expansion into global markets.

PT BYD Motor Indonesia, the Shenzhen-based automaker’s local subsidiary, introduced the Seal, Atto 3 and Dolphin in Jakarta. It already has seven dealers and plans to increase to 50 by the end of the year.

Eagle Zhao, president director of BYD Motor Indonesia, revealed plans to build a factory, saying: “We will accelerate the construction of a manufacturing plant in Indonesia starting this year."

Coordinating minister for economic affairs, Airlangga Hartarto said BYD had committed “to investing (IDR20trn) US$1.3bn in a plant with a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. I hope this will strengthen the era of the electric vehicle in Indonesia”.

Coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said the government and BYD signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of the BEV ecosystem in Indonesia during an official visit to China last May. Indonesian president Joko Widodo visited the company's factory in Chengdu last July.

Around 17,000 BEVs were sold in Indonesia last year, up from 10,000 in 2022, with Hyundai accounting for 7,460 units thanks mainly to its locally-assembled Ioniq 5.

SAIC-GM-Wuling sold just under 7,000 with the Air its best-selling model with 5,600 units. The company began selling its Binguo BEV in December, with deliveries of 1,400 that month.
