BYD enters Pakistan vehicle market

BYD and other Chinese OEMs active in Pakistan - a market seen as having good demand growth potential

David Leggett August 20 2024

BYD Auto is making preparations to launch vehicle sales in Pakistan, as the Chinese automaker steps up its expansion in the Asia-Pacific region.

China’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer last week unveiled three models at an event in the city of Lahore, including the Atto 3, Seal and Sealion 6, as part of a brand-building exercise ahead of the official sales launch later this year.

Earlier this year BYD signed up Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of local energy company The Hub Power Company Ltd, as its local distributor.

Liu Xueliang, the head of BYD’s Asia-Pacific sales, told reporters: “Our entry into the Pakistani market is not just about bringing advanced vehicles to consumers - it's also about driving a broader vision of environmental responsibility and technological innovation.”

Mega Motor’s CEO Aly Khan, said: “Our company’s vision is to drive Pakistan's future with sustainable mobility with BYD, the world’s foremost NEV manufacturer.” The company confirmed it plans to open three flagship dealer outlets this year, in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, along with a network of fast-charging stations in the country’s main cities and along major highways.

Separate reports have suggested BYD is also looking to build an assembly plant in the port city of Karachi to supply the local market, with completion scheduled for 2026.

Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said in a statement: “BYD has led the way globally and we warmly welcome BYD's entry into Pakistan's EV industry. We look forward to facilitating the green revolution in Pakistan."

Other Chinese automakers present in Pakistan include Great Wall Motor Company SAIC Motor Corporation and Chongqing Changan Automobile Company.
