BMW has released details of its Neue Klasse (New Class) X SUV (or Sports Activity Vehicle/SAV as the automaker prefers).
This first fully electric raised derivative on a new architecture will go into production in Debrecen, Hungary in 2025.
BMW earlier showed a Neue Klasse sedan at the IAA show in 2023.
The X has new drive and chassis control plus sixth generation eDrive (EV) drivetrain.
A new software stack was developed in house. Development chief Frank Weber said future BMWs would have four new 'super brains': high-performance computers working smartly together on what was previously processed separately. One unit integrates powertrain and driving dynamics with "up to 10 times more computing power". The second controls automated driving.
Inside, Panoramic Vision, already previously shown off, projects key information across the full width of the windscreen and will be complemented by an enhanced 3D head up display.
A central display is integrated into the instrument panel, giving both front passengers access to infotainment. Colours are transferred to the ambient lighting and also to the backlit textile surfaces of the instrument panel.
The latest eDrive has improved electric motors plus new (and now round) lithium ion battery cells with volumetric energy density 20% higher than the prismatic cells used previously. In combination with the switch to an 800 volt system, this is claimed to improve charging speed by 30% allowing recharge enough for 300km (200 miles) in 10 minutes plus 30% more range.
Aerodynamic drag is reduced 20% while new tyres and a special EV brake system increase overall efficiency by 25%.
A new plant based, mineral based and petroleum free surface material Verdana is used in the lower portion of the door panelling and in the centre console. Maritime plastics are also used for the first time for injection moulded parts. In some components, this secondary raw material obtained from discarded fishing nets, already accounts for 30%.
BMW noted the new Debrecen plant was planned and developed as an electric vehicle plant - the company calls it an iFactory.
